The colors of these flowers have a nostalgia of tinted time and dirty whiskey stains. Inspired by my love of painting to music and getting lost in the lyrics. I switch up who I’m listening to each week. This time my music choice overcomes me as I brush each petal. “Whiskey, whiskey whiskey. Wake up, shake it off and repeat. It’s just a phase, it’s not forever. It’s just a phase but still might have a ways to go. Walking on with no one left. Speak softly underneath my breath. Hey world you ain’t seen nothing yet. Hey now, it’s waiting. Whiskey, whiskey, whiskey. Wake up, shake it off and repeat. It’s just a phase, it’s not forever…” I add sunkissed highlights to each rose, as the harmonica fades, I lift the brush and she’s finished.

I don’t drink whiskey but this song resonates with my routine of daily painting. Wake up, shake off painting mistakes and repeat. Deeply enveloped within the lyrics, layers upon layers of paint and mark making build up the background and flower detail. The lyrics allow me to get lost in the painting, keeping me from thinking and getting in my head. There’s a beautiful stride when it happens. I painted two paintings this week, in addition to Whiskey Rose, total flower mode. I love flowers and I love this little shot of whiskey. Nod to John Mayer for such a clever song.
