Early one morning I was in deep thought and this image of the checkered race flag shot across my mind. I painted it that day. When I get these downloads of an image, I don't want to lose the inspiration and try to get the image documented on paper.
When I first moved to Kansas City, I was living with my sister and her family. Their neighbor loved racing. He and I were the same age and he was part of a racing crew. I would go to the amateur race tracks with him. Nascar wasn't in Kansas City yet, so amateur tracks it was. I loved getting to hang out in the Pit with the Pit Crew. It was so exciting. I was right on the track and as the cars came in for a PitStop, I watched the crew move about with exceptional speed. I couldn't believe my eyes as I watched each person with their specific "job" to get the car back on the track. It was exhilarating for this small town girl. I still remember when we would leave the tracks, I would rub my hand across my arm and feel the layer of rubber tread on my skin. It always stunned me how much debris the tire tread made.
